When will this be investigated? More Luzerne County Corruption? Read below:

    Press Release: October 21, 2009
    From: Karin Cabell
    To: All Media Outlets

Subject: Tom Gabos Needs To Explain Hiring To The Public

Public reaction to the hiring of businessman Tom Gabos, candidate for Hazleton City Council, by the Hazleton Area School District cannot go unnoticed by his opponents.
Gabos’s tenure as a City Councilman is not loaded with lofty ideas to help Hazleton. Until a recent City Council meeting Tom Gabos failed to introduce one piece of legislation to address the pressing issues facing Hazleton. It is hard to talk about your opponent’s record when it lacks historical information.
Reason would have it that Mr. Gabos was busy with other projects that commanded more attention than the City Council position. After all he owns his own electrical contracting business. In addition he opened an arcade business in downtown Hazleton along with his wife, Gale Zelenack.
But, as all of us know, in these dire economic times things are very tough for the unemployed. Having a political position allows one get to the head of the line for consideration.
Gabos tried to focus voters on bogus claims of prostitution in Hazleton to detract from his successful efforts to use his political position to secure a full time job for himself and a part time job for his wife.
As if those two businesses were not enough money for Gabos he was hired April 23, 2009 as a part time substitute maintenance person. However, it appears even the money from that position wasn't enough. He was hired as a full time maintenance person for Hazleton Area School District on September 24, 2009 for the Hazleton Elementary/Middle School, also known as "The Castle".. Not only did he use his political position to get himself hired but he also used it to be placed at "The Castle" where he is part of the Castle Fund trying to raise money to repair the auditorium. According to records twenty eight candidates applied for that position.
The Board of Directors of the Castle Fund includes himself as President and three Hazleton Area School Board Members, Elaine Curry, Steve Hahn, and Carmella Yenkevich, who voted to hire him full time as a maintenance person for the Hazleton Area School District this year. A Standard Speaker article from 2004 highlights the close association between Tom Gabos and Bob Childs, another member of the Hazleton Area School Board. "Childs isn't, but knows the building well, as he is close to Tom Gabos and Bob Tombasco".
Tom Gabos is President of the Greater Hazleton Historical Society along with his wife, Gale, as a fellow member of the Board of Directors. According to a HASD agenda dated March 26, 2008 under Finance Committee item "39 - Recommend Board approve the payment of $2,500 to the Greater Hazleton Historical Society and Museum for cleaning and related costs of the chandeliers in the Hazleton El./Middle School". So the school board members who hired Gabos as a part time maintenance person voted previous to pay another charity, where he sits as President, $2,500.00 to clean chandeliers. This action begs the question on whether Tom Gabos ultimately received the $2,500.00 as President of the Greater Hazleton Historical Society for cleaning the chandeliers.
A review of IRS 990 Forms found on http://www.guidestar.org http://www.guidestar.org confirm that as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Hazleton Historical Society Tom Gabos has been paid for work every year since at least 2002. Gabos is President of the Greater Hazleton Historical Society, his wife a member of the Board, and the same society that received payment from the Hazleton Area School District voted on by three members of the HASB that sit on the Castle Fund where Gabos is President.
According to IRS 990's filed for the Greater Hazleton Historical Society he was paid a total of $7,233.00 for electrical and maintenance work from 2002 (excluding the year 2005 because that return is not on the net or at http://www.guidestar.org ) through April 30, 2008 as a member of its Board of Directors then becoming President in March, 2008. The form for the year 1999 to 2000 there is no notation that he was paid for electrical or maintenance work. The prior year, 1997-1998, indicated no payment.
Businessman Gabos's wife, Gale Zelenack, was also approved as a substitute maintenance person for the Hazleton Area School District listed as item #73 on the June 25, 2009 agenda.
Tom Gabos and his wife, Gale, should win the Nobel prize for making lightning strike multiple times in the same places. In summation Gabos is an electrical contractor who owns an arcade business, paid as a Hazleton City Council Member, paid as a full time maintenance person for the Hazleton Area School District, paid as a part time maintenance person for Greater Hazleton Historical Society, and a wife who was hired as a part time maintenance substitute with the Hazleton Area School District. And that is just plain wrong.
Tom, when is enough ENOUGH? How about leaving a job for some poor family who is struggling to make ends meet and could use a job for a family member.

Its a shame that Tom Gabos and his wife are getting jobs because of political favors during an economic slowdown when many blue collar workers are losing their jobs.

I reviewed the local broadcast of the Hazleton City Council candidates on http:www.ssptv.com

It was obvious to me that a vote for MOPE would bring total chaos to the city! She was seen as very argumentative in the discussion with a Hazleton City Police Officer at the recent Hazleton City Council meeting. I was unsure of her goals. Perhaps it is just to be noticed and seen.

    We need Karin Cabell!
    Read this commentary.

A VALLEY RESIDENT COMMENTS ON HAZLETON COUNCIL DEBATE

I do not live in Hazleton. I can not vote in Hazleton. However, I do bank in Hazleton, dine in Hazleton, go to a doctor in Hazleton, etc. And for this reason, I do have a vested interest in the Hazleton City Council race and the future viability of the City.

I watched the debate of Hazleton City Council Candidates on local news the other evening as a completely unbiased viewer (being a Valley resident). And, upon watching objectively, it was abundantly apparent that the candidate with the most thoughtful ideas was Karin Cabell. The other candidates really did not offer much in terms of original thinking--many simply parroted Karin's ideas or, worse, they wasted time whining about how the city got in this predicament (rather than providing ideas as to how to pull the city out of it's economic situation). And, I must say I found it offensive that Jean Mopes referred on live TV to so many of the residents of the city of Hazleton as "deadbeats" (this was said and anyone who wishes to confirm can watch the rebroadcast online via SSPTV''s Inside Scoop). The fact is, there is a recession at this time and probably plenty of people out of work/strapped for funds and struggling to pay bills. The city may have it's share of residents not doing their part, but to make a blanket reference to Hazletonians, many of whom who are struggling to pay their bills, is both ignorant and should be offensive to those in the community.

It appeared to me that Karin had many interesting and realistic ideas to make the city economically sound; give youth alternatives to gangs/violence; improve police presence on Hazleton City Streets. Hazleton is on the brink and this is not a time for people to focus on Party affliliation only in making decision. And it is not the time to elect candidates for office who only want point fingers and complain about how the city arrived in its present situation or insult the residents of the city. It is helpful to learn from history but looking only backwards at the expense of offering ideas to move the city forward is, frankly, a waste of energy.

This is the time for candidates in office who can resolve the situation and save the city. There are three open seats on Hazleton City Council and as one looking in objectively on the debate and the qualifications of those running, I encourage Hazleton Area voters to get informed, watch the debate online and, from there, they should feel confident in a decision, whether Republicans or Democrats, to support Karin Cabell for Hazleton City Council by casting a vote for her on November 3rd.

    Mayor wants to close bar
    By KELLY MONITZ (Staff Writer)
    Published: October 13, 2009

"I've had enough of it," Barletta said of the downtown Hazleton bar. "A nuisance bar is too nice of a term for it. It's only a matter of time before someone is killed.

"This place needs to be closed down," he said.

But the owners say the bar isn't the problem.

The shootings have happened outside the bar on Wyoming Street, a street with a reputation for violent incidents....................

    All:

I commend the efforts taken to close the local "nuisance" bars in our city. La Cantina is two blocks away from where I sleep. I often hear shots fired in the night and sometimes during daylight hours. It is difficult to sleep peacefully. I hope to not be a target of violence. I trust in God to protect me.

This process to close these establishments will assist in the elimination of some serious crime! Please expedite and make this a number one priority! I am not afraid to express my opinion on this situation. It is a chronic and severe problem. It involves the safety of adults and children. This has been a scene of significant influence on the youth in the neighborhoods. I pray we eliminate the drug traffic and replace it with pro-active steps to improve our city. I stand alongside Mayor Lou Barletta on this issue.

This problem will not just go away. We must all work on this together.
The gangs are growing. How can we maintain funds for our police force to do this job effectively and safely? We require more manpower and a strong presence to find a solution to this problem.

Too many individuals are making this into a racial issue. Part of this activity is from illegal aliens. It is not about race. The recruitment of our youth into a horrible lifestyle filled with violence, teen prostitution and addiction is not the legacy we will leave for others to solve. Join us to find solutions.

Again I restate that I am behind Mayor Lou Barletta with the closure of these establishments enhancing and adding to the crime in our city. We must also take things a step further and stop the growth of the gangs in our area. The youth must be educated to understand that this is not the healthy lifestyle to enter. The goal should be life-long learning. Education for a stronger future. I understand funding for programs are cut. This is a result of poor leadership and abuse of power within our own government. In Luzerne County we are searching for honesty, ethics, accountability, reform and transparency in our government. This GOP movement is called OPERATION H.E.A.R.T. I hope that this election draws attention to reform. These children seek attention, love and easy money to solve their problems. When our children are instructed to live with this violence as a normal activity then we lose the battle against crime.

Use your vote on November 3rd to find H.E.A.R.T. for our city. It is time to realize voting straight party is not effective in solving our problems. Vote for the individuals who represent these values and offer reasonable solutions. I do not want more complaints from the candidates. We hear this frequently from a few of our own city council members. I admire those individuals who offer us options.
I will vote for those who are part of the answers to solve these problems.

We need Karin Cabell and Jim Perry for Hazleton City Council! They will work to find the real solutions.

    Sincerely,

    Kathy Dobash

Avoid chaos! Elect Cabell, Perry and Mundie for Hazleton City Council!?????
have you read the paper, 2 MILLION dollar deficit, police pension in shambles, lawsuits on bad decisions of the Mayor with potential ofmillions of dollars at stake, no answers coming from the Mayor, or from city council or city council candidates Perry and Cabell. She wants to say we shouldn't look back at the reasons we are in the situation we are in! i see why, if we did the SITTING members in the majority would have to admit they allowed a Mayor to run the city in the hole! now we have a woman from Conyngham that drives in and out of the City telling me who best to vote for?
One day you have the Mayor say "he will close the bar down" and the next he is "talking to the owners" he needs to stop playing politics and start leading.

time for a change and it begins with voting against the endorsed candidates of the Mayor, vote NO on Cabell and Perry,

It has been a busy weekend! My foot is healing slowly.

HEY THAT IS LIFE FOR ME HERE! So now it is time to respond on my little comments here on NewsTalkPA.com!

Lowerluzerne should reveal his or her face and have some courage. It appears you do not want to reveal your true self. Post a photograph of yourself with your NEWSTALK pretend name. What do you have to hide?

You say the city has a 2 million dollar deficit. Where do you get these numbers, out of a hat? Provide proof of your assertions and stop parroting the opposition's rhetoric! BTW, sitting member Tom Gabos voted against the Hazleton Creek project. That project brought 2 million dollars in revenue to the city and enabled the city to hire 9 more policemen! So, if the city would have followed Tom Gabos' lead we would have a 4 million dollar deficit (according to your numbers) as well as a deficit of 9 police officers! Yeah, that's a real genius for you! You are asserting that there is underhandedness afoot, again, where is your proof?

LET'S HAVE MORE NEWSTALK ABOUT OTHER ISSUES!

    Illegal Immigration Relief Act:
This lawsuit hasn't and won't cost the city a dime. The legal defense fund ( which people from all over the WORLD have contributed) has fully funded that lawsuit. Again, back up your empty assertions with fact or get off this blog!

You must have watched the televised debate on SSPTV or you would not have made the reference that Karin Cabell "doesn't want to look back". If your going to quote someone get it right! She said that we need to move on in order to move the city forward. WE NEED SOLUTIONS NOT FINGER POINTING! This is all that Gabos and Mope can do. That is when they are not busy getting ANOTHER house torn down because it ruins a view. This shows Mope's obsession with code enforcement. Not to mention Gabos and his wife' attained jobs with the school district bumping some poor guy from his position and shift at the Castle! Owning 2 businesses, getting money from the Historical Society to clean chandeliers @ $2200.00 a pop and his council wages aren't enough for the greedy gus! Yep, if you want self serving greedy council members by all means vote for them! If you want someone who has real ideas that will work for the city vote for Karin Cabell and Jim Perry. I suggest you re-watch the debate http://www.ssptv.com
I guess Gabos was terrified to show up. What has he done for the city? He hasn't done a thing in 4 years, nothing, nada, zilch! Watch Mope chatter about a lot of nothing and then really concentrate on what Karin had to say, the others on the panel either agreed with her or parroted her because she was the only one with viable answers and solutions!

Also, if you knew anything about the law you would realize you just can't take someone's business away! As for revoking their liquor licenses that lies with LCB. Why shouldn't he meet with the business owner? I know that if he would have refused to meet with them you would be lamenting that as well just to be contrary!!! Come on, knock it off. Mayor Barletta saved this city from the devastation that was Marsicano. We are still being affected by Marsicano's back door dealings and cronyism not to mention lawsuits from his administration.

October 13th, quote from Bob Reynolds from Channel 16, "Lieb said already the the city is facing tough financial times as it is and was forced to take the action on trash fees. "Our deficit is over a million dollars, which we are working real hard on formulating next year's budget and try to recover," ok so some where between 2 million and as she states over a million. and if you read the Standard Speaker on August 2, 2009 you will see what Ms Leib said there,"Lieb said a rumor that the $665,000 deficit has grown to $1.8 million cannot be confirmed or denied until the 2008 audit provides supporting data" will you ask them at the next public meeting what the audit showed?
this is all the while the present mayor and his majority on council have been there.

Dredge issue, here is how good of a project it is http://www.scubadadreefpix.com/subpar.htm, it is a hoax, monitoring NOTHING> all smoke and mirrors.

i dont know the law, i do know when some one isnt being truthful. the Mayor was quoted in this article "the place needs to be closed down", http://www.standardspeaker.com/news/1.329214, and then 5 days later he tones down his tough stance to this, http://www.standardspeaker.com/news/city_meeting_tavern_owners_to_stem_violence

you as the rest of the voters need to read and look at what this administration has done, not blame others, but the actions or inaction of this council.

the City needs a Council that will be a check and balance to this strong form of Mayor government.

    LOL!!!!!

There are many things wrong with this response.

If you are an intelligent person I can only assume you are making comments because you receive pleasure from pointing fingers and making complaints. Tell me if you are person who attends the Hazleton city meetings on a regular basis? Why do you hide your face here in this forum?

This is the saddest part about this commentary from lowerluzerne:

Why do you hide behind a fake name? Who are you? Do you enjoy watching the chaos you create? Place your intelligence and energy into positive efforts to assist those in need. I cannot respect someone trying to have a conversation with me when they wear a mask. I know it is time for Halloween. LOL You are not a child. OOPs! Maybe you are! Why are you afraid to tell me your name and publish a photo on this forum?

I believe this is the same "dance, routine, political game or whatever you want to call" it repeated.

The heart of the financial matter for the city of Hazleton is that our expenditures increased because of a population growth. The tax revenue decreased. There was no mismanagagement by the city or anything underhanded in this case. Ideally with an increase in population growth the city should have received more tax income.

The issue with closing La Cantina and the Mayor LOU:

The owners approached the Mayor in the hope to save their business. The Mayor was moving to have it shut done becasue of the extreme violence and illegal activity. It appeared the owners were complacent. The owners reached out so the Mayor Lou Barletta showed that he is the diplomat that we all know and love.

It is a wonder to me that someone can back a political candidate because of their ability to complain. Mope wants more code enforcement officers. Why doesn't she request her running mate to rescind his health insurance? His health insurance costs the city $16,000 a year. That is enough to hire a part-time officer. At the last council meeting they voted on ending health insurance for city council members.

    Case close!

    NEXT TOPIC?

By the way who are you again?

It is my hope these people did not open this business to have a shoot out every Friday or Saturday night.

You mentioned an article that has quotes from a far left environmentalist self-proclaimed "expert".

Here is a link to the REAl science behind the Hazleton Creek project:

here is a reason to vote NO on Cabell. from today's standard speaker article on the candidates, Cabell said this "I applaud the administration's decision to publish the names of those that are delinquent."
She doesn't see a problem with the administration letting it go that it got to be this big of an issue. she just wants to go along!!!!!!

I wonder how she feels about a City that is facing
    1. 1.8 million dollar deficit
    2. pension system with a 600k dollar hole in it next year, the Mayor cant overtax the wage earners anymore to pay for post retirement benefits
    3. importation of toxic waste into our city
    4. a zoning board that allowed 200+ big city criminals into our downtown
    5. looming lawsuits that could potentially cost the city MILLIONS of dollars

it cant be about applauding the current polices of this administration, it has to be moving the City forward with new ideas.

    OMG!!!!!!!!
    http://www.timesleader.com/news/2010_Barletta_budget_prposal_includes_layoffs_tax_and_fee_hikes.html
"A homeowner in the city with a $30,000-per-year job and a home valued at $100,000 could expect to pay another $235 in taxes and fees next year, according to a budget proposal Mayor Lou Barletta released to council today."
"the lay-off of eight police officers for six months"

now blame all you want but this is bad leading on the part of the Mayor and this city council!!!!!!!! this is the recovery plan the Mayor has told us to wait for? i can not believe he wants to lay off 8 police officers, the time has come when the rubber meets the road, and this Mayor has to be called on the carpet for his wrongful mismanagement of the city's financial picture.

HERE IS THE REASON NOT TO VOTE FOR CABELL AND PERRY. THEY ARE ENDORSED BY THIS MAYOR AND WILL FOLLOW HIS LEAD, WE CAN NOT, CAN NOT ALLOW THIS.

ok, its been 4 weeks from my last post on these TWO NEW REPUBLICAN council persons. I made the argument then, I am making it NOW< what are their ideas on the Water Authority sale?
or are they what I had suggested, lap dogs for the Mayor? they ran, people voted them in, now they want input from them on these important issues.
