    JACK WAGNER FOR GOVERNOR

WAGNER TOP VOTE-GETTER AT DEMOCRATIC STATE COMMITTEE

Lancaster (Feb. 6, 2010) – Auditor General Jack Wagner received the most votes of all gubernatorial candidates nominated during Democratic State Committee's endorsement meeting held today in Lancaster.

"I'm honored to have earned the highest vote total from State Committee members today," Wagner said. "I want to thank them for their support and look forward to working with them on the important issues facing Pennsylvania in the months and years ahead." Wagner led both ballots cast; on the second ballot, he earned 153 out of 304 votes cast, over 50% of the vote and twice the total of his nearest opponent. He also earned the majority of votes in 43 county caucuses.

Today’s vote shows once again that Wagner is the biggest vote-earner in the field and has the ability to win. Wagner has won two statewide races, most recently in 2008 when he was re-elected to a second term as Auditor General. He earned more than 3.3 million votes, the second highest statewide vote total in Pennsylvania history. His vote total was 330,000 more than Republican Attorney General Tom Corbett. He also had more votes than Corbett in the 2004 general election. Wagner indicated, most importantly, that he was ready to serve Pennsylvanians.

"Our party must stand for reform and that is why so many members of our party - the party of small business and working people - gave me their support today," said Wagner. "People want change. People want reform. The status quo is not acceptable. The back room deal is not acceptable. People matter to me and to this Democratic Party and that is the message delivered today."

As Governor, Wagner’s top priorities for Pennsylvania will include: providing a HOPE Scholarship Program to help families afford the cost of higher education, maintaining vital government services without raising taxes, maximizing the state’s new Marcellus Shale energy resources in an environmentally responsible way, and creating high quality jobs to grow our economy.

Jack Wagner is a decorated Vietnam War combat veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, former member and president of the Pittsburgh City Council, and former state senator representing Allegheny County. Between the time of his military service and his service as an elected public official, Wagner worked his way through college on the GI Bill and as a paramedic, followed by ten years working as a Certified Safety Professional helping to ensure that businesses provide safe work environments for their employees. He was chosen by Pennsylvania families and taxpayers to serve as Pennsylvania’s 50th elected Auditor General in 2004, and then he was re-elected in 2008 with 3.3 million votes and 59% of the vote.
